smile Credit Rating

smile is a trading name of The Co-operative Bank p.l.c. (FCA firm reference 121885). The ratings on this page are The Co-operative Bank p.l.c.'s. See which banks share a banking licence.

smile is not a bank in its own right: it is a trading name of The Co-operative Bank p.l.c. (FCA firm reference 121885), part of Coventry Building Society. Credit rating agencies rate the licence holder, not the brand, so smile has no rating of its own. The Co-operative Bank p.l.c. currently holds a blended long-term credit rating of A, which is investment grade; that is the rating shown on this page. smile was launched by The Co-operative Bank in 1999 as an internet bank and is still one of its trading names, but it no longer accepts new applications. The Co-operative Bank has been owned by Coventry Building Society since 2025; until the planned transfer of its business into the Society (expected 1 January 2027, subject to the court), smile and Co-op Bank deposits share one limit that is separate from Coventry's. A credit rating is an opinion on an institution's ability to meet its obligations, not a guarantee, and it is separate from deposit protection.
