Bank branch closures 2026: every closure UK banks have announced

UK banks have announced 29 full branch closures still to come (Lloyds Bank 22, NatWest 3, Santander 2, Halifax 2), plus 37 part-time counters, van stops and moves. Every entry is checked against the bank's own notice; Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland block automated readers, so theirs come from archived copies and may miss their latest announcements. Banks must give at least 12 weeks' notice, and several have promised to keep all their branches open for years.

The rules on closing a branch

The FCA expects a bank that decides to close a branch to tell customers "no less than 12 weeks before a proposed closure". Shorter notice is acceptable only in exceptional circumstances outside its control, such as a landlord not renewing a lease or damage to the building.

Since 18 September 2024 the banks the Government designates must have LINK assess the effect on local access to cash when they close a branch. If LINK finds a significant gap, the bank must keep the branch open until the extra service it recommends, often a banking hub, is available. The rules do not stop branches closing.

LINK had recommended 283 banking hubs by 23 October 2026, of which its own list shows 260 open. LINK says a recommended service is expected to open within 12 weeks if there is nothing in place already, and most are delivered by Cash Access UK.

Banks that have promised not to close branches, or to announce no more

Nationwide: Nationwide says every one of its branches will stay open until at least the start of 2030: "There may be circumstances beyond our control that mean we have to close a branch. Or relocate it in the same town. We'll only do so when there's no other workable option."

Virgin Money: Nationwide, which owns Virgin Money, extended its promise to all 696 Nationwide and Virgin Money branches, 605 and 91, "until at least 2030", including where a Nationwide and a Virgin Money branch are close to each other.

HSBC UK: HSBC UK extended its Branch Promise in December 2025, "guaranteeing that all 327 branches will stay open until at least 2027". It did not say whether that means the start or the end of 2027.

Santander: Santander says: "We won't make any further branch closures before 2028. There may be situations we can't control that mean we have to close or relocate a branch." Closures it had already announced went ahead.

TSB: TSB, now owned by Santander, says "we do not intend to close any additional TSB or Santander UK branches before 2028 at the earliest".

Principality Building Society: Principality committed to "maintaining its high street and community presence until at least the end of 2030", saying it would only close a branch when it must, for example when a landlord ends a lease or it has several branches in one place. That is a promise to stay in each community rather than to keep every branch.
