The largest UK banks and building societies

By total assets the largest UK banks for savers are Lloyds Bank (£631bn), NatWest (£450bn), Nationwide Building Society (£382bn), HSBC UK Bank (£356bn) and Barclays Bank UK (£303bn). The table ranks 54 UK banks and building societies that take savers' deposits by the total assets in their latest annual report, with customer deposits, the customer numbers they publish and their current credit ratings. Each row is one banking licence, so it is also one £120,000 FSCS limit; banks owned by a larger one are counted inside it, never twice.

Figures are consolidated where a bank has subsidiaries, as at the date of its latest accounts, which differ by bank (the date links to the report). Credit rating is this site's blend of the agencies' current long-term ratings. Goldman Sachs International Bank, which offers Marcus savings in the UK, reports in US dollars: total assets of $110.1bn and customer deposits of $91.1bn at 31 December 2025. Revolut is not ranked: its UK bank, Revolut Bank UK Ltd, opened in March 2026 and had £24.8m of assets at 31 December 2025, while most UK customers' money was still held by Revolut Ltd as e-money (£9.3bn of customer balances, which are not bank deposits).

Bigger on paper: the wholesale banks

Two UK-registered banks are larger than any in the table, mostly because of trading and derivative assets rather than savers' deposits. Since ring-fencing in 2019 they sit apart from their groups' high-street banks (Barclays Bank UK and HSBC UK above) and do most of their business with companies and markets.

HSBC Bank £707.7bn £244.8bn AA- (S&P, Moody's, Fitch) Dec 2025

Standard Chartered Bank, registered in London but doing most of its business outside the UK, reports in US dollars: total assets of $593.4bn at 31 December 2025.

Does size make a bank safer?

Not by itself. Size changes how a failure would be handled: the Bank of England plans to bail in the largest banks, so their bondholders and shareholders absorb losses while the bank keeps running, whereas smaller banks are planned to be sold or wound up with an FSCS payout. Either way, eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per person per licence. The independent view of each bank's strength is its credit rating: the safest UK banks by rating is a different list from this one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest bank in the UK?

Among banks that take UK savers' deposits, Lloyds Bank is the largest, with total assets of £631.3bn in its accounts to December 2025 (including Bank of Scotland plc, the licence behind Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with £339.6bn of assets). Two mainly wholesale banks, Barclays Bank PLC and HSBC Bank plc, have larger balance sheets because of their trading businesses.

What are the top 10 banks in the UK?

By total assets, the ten largest UK banks and building societies taking savers' deposits are Lloyds Bank, NatWest, Nationwide Building Society, HSBC UK Bank, Barclays Bank UK, Santander UK, Royal Bank of Scotland, Coventry Building Society, Yorkshire Building Society, TSB Bank.

What is the largest building society in the UK?

Nationwide Building Society, with total assets of £382.3bn. The next largest are Coventry Building Society (£88.2bn) and Yorkshire Building Society (£66.3bn).

Is a bigger bank safer?

Size is not a safety rating. The largest banks are the ones the Bank of England would bail in, keeping them running while investors absorb losses; smaller banks would be sold or wound up with an FSCS payout. Eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per person per banking licence either way, and a bank's credit rating is the independent measure of its strength.
